Ayurvedic Wisdom: Choosing Herbs for Balance, Not Just Symptoms

For centuries, Ayurveda has guided people toward health by focusing on balance rather than just treating symptoms. Rooted in the understanding of natural qualities—hot or cold, dry or moist—this ancient system helps us align with nature’s rhythms, making herbal medicine more intuitive and effective.

Beyond Symptoms: The Ayurvedic Approach

Unlike modern medicine, which often targets symptoms directly, Ayurveda looks at the deeper imbalances in the body. Every person has a unique constitution (or dosha)—Vata (air & space), Pitta (fire & water), and Kapha (earth & water). The key to health is balancing these energies rather than just masking discomfort.

For example, if someone frequently experiences dry skin, rather than simply applying moisturizer, Ayurveda asks: is this dryness due to excess Vata? If so, the goal isn’t just hydration—it’s bringing warmth, nourishment, and grounding to counteract the airy, cool, and dry nature of Vata.

Hot vs. Cold: Why it Matters in Herbalism

Just as we dress differently depending on the season, our bodies respond differently to herbs based on their inherent qualities. Some herbs have a heating effect, stimulating digestion, circulation, and metabolism. Others cool, calm, and soothe inflammation.

  • Hot Herbs: Ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, and cayenne are warming and great for sluggish digestion or cold extremities.

  • Cold Herbs: Peppermint, aloe vera, and coriander are cooling and ideal for overheating, inflammation, or excess Pitta.

  • Drying Herbs: Sage and turmeric help counteract excess dampness, such as congestion or sluggish digestion.

  • Moistening Herbs: Licorice and marshmallow root provide hydration and soothe dryness.

When choosing herbs, Ayurveda encourages us to observe our own bodies. Feeling sluggish and cold? A warming tea with ginger and cinnamon may be more effective than reaching for caffeine. Overheated and irritable? Cooling herbs like coriander and peppermint may help calm both body and mind.

Small Lifestyle Shifts = Big Impact

While herbs are powerful, Ayurveda teaches that simple lifestyle choices shape long-term health. For example, something as basic as trying to eat at regular times can restore balance better than the strongest remedy.

  • Eat with the sun: Having your largest meal at midday when digestion is strongest is an Ayurvedic golden rule.

  • Stay consistent: Eating at irregular times confuses digestion, making the body work harder to process food.

  • Self-care over shortcuts: Relying on herbs without making lifestyle changes is like watering a plant but never giving it sunlight.

Licorice Tea: A Soothing Ayurvedic Remedy

One of Ayurveda’s most beloved remedies is warm licorice tea, which is both cooling and moistening—perfect for calming the nervous system and soothing digestion. Licorice’s naturally sweet flavor nourishes Vata, its cooling nature soothes inflamed Pitta, and its demulcent (moistening) properties help balance dry tissues.

A simple cup of licorice tea can be a game-changer for:

  • Soothing a stressed nervous system (ideal for burnout or anxiety)

  • Easing digestive discomfort (especially acid reflux or irritation)

  • Supporting the respiratory system (great for dry coughs or throat irritation)

A New Perspective on Herbal Medicine

For those struggling to make sense of herbalism or wanting to go deeper, Ayurveda offers a powerful shift in thinking. Instead of viewing herbs as quick fixes, we start seeing them as allies—tools that help us restore balance by working with our bodies rather than against them.

By recognising the natural qualities in ourselves and in plants, we unlock the full potential of herbal medicine, creating lasting wellness through harmony, not just symptom relief.
