Supporting your lymphatic system isn't about chasing wellness trends—it's about learning to care for the body that carries you. Discover simple daily rituals, gentle movement and traditional practices that may help support wellbeing as we move through life's changing seasons.

When I turned 45 and realised something. Even though I was still busy... I wasn't moving anymore. Not really.

I wasn't chasing kids around the yard, the park, and all those exhausting things you do as a young parent.

I wasn't dancing the night away or going on energy packed adventures with my friends.

I wasn't working multiple jobs and ridiculous hours.

I no longer had the endless energy I once took for granted.

I was gardening.

I was fencing

I was farming.

I was house-wifing

I was keeping busy and active.

But I was also now doing a lot more

Standing.

Creating.

Sitting.

Writing.

Packing orders.

Going to bed early.

Waking up early.

Repeat.

Somewhere along the way...

My body quietly whispered "I'm changing".

There comes a season in life when our bodies begin asking for something different, at first we don't notice so much, 5 years quietly becomes 10. Our 30s quickly turns to 40 something and before we know it, our bodies are changing, we don't have the same energy levels we once had.

And for many of us, we get caught in a battle where our bodies begin moving to a different rhythm, which leads to weight gain and our health starts to suffer.

But were you aware that there are simple 'self care' things that you can do to better support your health and wellbeing without joining a gym, signing onto a 30 day challenge, consuming fad weight loss (liquid diet) drinks or suffering in silence?

Loving yourself more, understanding your amazing body better, are great ways to start, so let's break it down, together.

What Is The Lymphatic System?

In a nutshell - The lymphatic system is a the most vital network of vessels, tissues, and organs that acts as the body’s drainage and defense system. It removes excess fluids from tissues, absorbs fats, and produces immune cells to protect the body from infections and dis-eases.

As someone who has always led a fit and active life, studied the arts of massage (remedial, sports and lymphatic), reflexology, health & nutrition in my younger years. I was always aware of 'the lymphatic system' and, I thought I knew what it was all about. Now in my 40s and in hindsight, I may have know about the importance of the lymphatic system, but I didn't really understand it until I started living in it.

The lymphatic system is such a vital part of our body's immune and circulatory networks.

Its three main jobs are to:

  1. Maintain fluid balance by draining excess fluid from tissues,

  2. Transport dietary fats from the intestines, and

  3. Defend the body against infections by filtering out harmful pathogens

You may have noticed small swollen glands beneath your jaw, around your neck, under your arms or in your groin when you've been unwell.

Lymph nodes act as the body's primary filtration and defense centers. They filter lymph fluid to trap harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells, while also housing immune cells (such as T and B cells) that destroy these invaders and produce antibodies.

Their two primary roles include:

  • Filtration: As lymph fluid (which collects waste and excess fluid from tissues) passes through the nodes, specialised cells filter out foreign particles, dead cells, and debris

  • Immune Response: The nodes are packed with lymphocytes (white blood cells). When a pathogen is detected, these immune cells multiply rapidly and initiate an attack. This activity often causes the nodes to temporarily swell (commonly known as swollen "glands")

Most Common Causes

  • Infections: The most frequent culprit. A cold, flu, strep throat, ear infection, tooth abscess , skin infections, sluggish metabolism causing lymphatic congestion; any of these things can cause localised swelling in the lymph node areas.

  • Viral Illnesses: Conditions like mononucleosis (glandular fever) often cause widespread swelling.

  • Inflammatory Conditions: Immune system disorders like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus can trigger swelling

Less Common (But Serious) Causes

In rare cases, swollen nodes that are hard, painless, and rapidly growing can indicate a blood cancer like lymphoma, or cancer that has spread from another part of the body. And if you notice this in your body, make that call to see your doctor,

Forgotten Healthcare/Selfcare Practices They Knew Long Ago

Now that we've empowered ourselves on the lymphatic system, what it does and how it responds to dis-ease, lets talk about how we get it moving and working more efficiently in simple ways that don't add to your already busy life.

There once was a time when nobody talked about "self-care, because it was already an everyday part of life. There were no morning routines to film. No influencers telling us how to live. No expensive wellness trends arriving every season. No scientist advising us of their latest theory on health we should follow.

Yet somehow...

People lived healthier, more robust lives then we find ourselves living today.

Not because it was fashionable.

Because they were better connected to the natural rhythms of nature and their bodies.

As children, many of us were handed a washer and told to "give yourself a good scrub - Legs, thighs, belly bum! Your face, your neck, your pits, your privates ... And don't forget your arms".

Mum never said,

"We're stimulating your lymphatic circulation."

She simply said...

"Give yourself a good scrub."

Looking back, I can't help but smile.

The face.

The neck.

Under the arms.

Even the groin.

They're all areas rich in lymph nodes.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

Or perhaps generations before us understood more about caring for the body than we give them credit for.

Today we call them beauty tools.

Body brushes.

Body washers.

Loofahs

Sea sponges

Massage oils.

Herbal teas

Facial rollers.

But perhaps they were never intended to make us more beautiful, perhaps they were simply helping us stay well.

As I've grown older, I've realised something about my own life. I'm still busy, busier than ever, in fact. But it's a different kind of busy, I don't move in the same way I once did.

My body noticed before my mind did. And one evening she whispered to me "I'm changing' and at first I was a little unsettled, but then I embraced her and reminded her of how amazing she is.

So I started gifting myself movement again. Not because someone on social media told me to. Because my body started letting me know I needed to start moving in different ways, a gentler way, a kinder way. In ways that weren't going to add extra to my already full life.

I started doing 'slow yoga', when I'd wake at some ridiculous o'clock in the morning, instead of reading a book or alphabetise the kitchen pantry.

Not to become more flexible.

Not to lose weight.

Not to be 30 again.

But to become stronger for the decades still ahead ...

To BREATHE.

To STRETCH.

To STRENGTHEN.

To MOVE.

I started paying attention to how I washed my body in the shower, memories of being a kid, being told to "Use the washer and scrub yourself! Up and down, shake it as you go."

If you've ever been fortunate enough to have a lymphatic massage, it's exactly the same, minus the washer. So I started incorporating this into my morning and night showers.

A good way to remember it is - unlike our heart, our lymphatic system doesn't have a pump. The skin and the lymphatic system are deeply and fundamentally interconnected, and rely on us to keep it moving.

So I started alternating my sea sponge with my dry body brush (Yes, that's right ..I wet body brush - because I don't have the time to dry brush). I started to welcome cold showers over hot (and or switching between the two).

I drew from my knowledge bank of herbalism and started adding Cleavers to my morning tea infusions, when I started to notice swollen glands in my body.

I wasn't trying to detox.

I wasn't chasing another wellness trend.

I simply wanted to support my body to do what it does best, in a simple, gentle way.

Cleavers—another humble wild weed gifted to us by our great Mother—is one of those beautiful plants that has quietly grown beside us for generations and long been valued in traditional herbalism for supporting the lymphatic system. It's amazing properties act as a gentle tonic that encourages the movement of lymph fluid, helping to clear out metabolic waste and reduce swollen or congested lymph nodes.

By introducing these simple yet gentle rituals to my daily life, my body has noticed the difference .... Difference in the way she moves. Difference in the way she feels. Difference in her outlook of our future. And now she whispers to me with confidence "We've got this!"

And perhaps that's the lesson, not that one ritual or ideology holds all the answers, but that many small actions practised consistently and intentionally, have the power to make great change.

Maybe self-care was never supposed to be complicated or luxurious.

Maybe it was always meant to look like...

A walk outside.

A plus size lady practicing yoga

A nourishing cup of herbal tea.

A relaxing soak in the pool.

A body brush in the shower.

A handmade soap.

A quiet stretch.

A lymphatic massage.

Tiny rituals.

Tiny moments.

Tiny acts of care.

Not because we're trying to become someone else, but because we're re-membering with how to care for the person we've always been.

The beautiful thing is...

Modern science continues uncovering why so many of these everyday practices support our wellbeing, our ancestors may not have spoken about lymphatic circulation, fascia, nervous system regulation or skin microbiomes, but they certainly understood something just as important.

The body thrives when we care for it with consistency, knowledge and respect.

That's what Sweet Earth has always been trying to do—to re-member, that caring for ourselves was never vanity...

It was wisdom. Passed from one generation to the next.

Quietly.

Lovingly.

Intentionally.

Until somewhere along the way...

We forgot.
