🌿 The Truth About Solid Shampoo Bars - And What Nobody Told Me ...

When I first switched to solid shampoo and conditioner bars, I wasn't instantly in love.
As someone who had spent decades using conventional bottled products, I expected my shampoo and conditioner bars to behave pretty much in the same way.
They didn't.
The shampoo felt different.
The conditioner felt different.
And for a little while, I wondered what all the fuss was about.
I was already over traditional hair care products after experiencing the overwhelming benefits of handmade soaps and skincare, and I wanted the same for my hair and scalp. So I started searching the internet looking for "How to use' articles, but there weren't any. I went back and had a good look into my ingredients and recipe. Then I realised something important. The biggest lesson?
I wasn't using them properly. No-one was telling me just how much solid hair care loves water and lots of it!
Just like a bar of soap, solid shampoo and conditioner bars need water to help activate. The more I used them, the more I learned to stop treating them like bottled products and start working with them as the concentrated botanical bars they are.
Once I found the rhythm, everything changed .....

My hair felt lighter.
My shower became less cluttered.
The plastic bottles disappeared.
And I haven't looked back.
Why Conventional Hair Care Has Trained Us Differently
The more I learned about hair and scalp health, the more I realised that many of us have been taught to approach hair care in a way that doesn't necessarily serve us.
For years I believed I needed to wash my hair every day.
If it felt oily, wash it.
If it felt dry, buy another product.
If it felt frizzy, buy another product.

Looking back, I realised I was stuck in a cycle of washing, stripping and replacing what had just been stripped away. The more I researched, the more I discovered that many conventional hair care products are designed to create dependency on the next product in the line.
Shampoo strips.
Conditioner replaces.
Serum smooths.
Treatment repairs.
And before you know it, your shower is full of bottles and your hair still isn't happy.
The Silicone Illusion
One of the biggest lightbulb moments came during a conversation with my hairdresser. When I mentioned what I was using on my hair, she encouraged me to take a closer look at the ingredients in conventional hair care products.
She recommended me to really look into my current hair care products and how these big brands were using silicones, as it coats the hair shaft, creating the appearance of smoothness and shine.
What I found was, so many brands used things called Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, and Bis-Aminopropyl Dimethicone/Amodimethicone (amino silicones), synthetic polymers derived from silicon and oxygen.
It's often a coating sitting on top of the hair. Many silicones are not water-soluble, meaning they do not easily wash away. With repeated use, they can accumulate on the hair shaft, creating a barrier. This build-up weighs hair down, making it feel heavy, limp, and less voluminous. It can also make it harder for moisture to reach the hair fibre.
As silicone layers build up, they can contribute to dryness and brittleness for some hair types, particularly when cleansing is not thorough enough. This compromised state can make hair more prone to breakage when styled or brushed. Ironically, what once improved the look and feel of hair can begin to leave it looking dull.
As soon as I moved away from these heavy silicone-based products, my hair initially felt different, lighter you could say. Then, over time, it began feeling stronger and looking healthier - bye-bye constant split ends.
Not coated.
Natural.
Healthier.

The Hair Training Myth
Another thing I discovered was that many of us have been told we can "train" our scalp to stop producing oil by washing less. The truth is a little more nuanced.
Our scalp is living skin. Oil production is influenced by genetics, hormones, stress levels, age, health and environment. Rather than following arbitrary timelines, many hair and skin professionals are now realising and recommend treating your scalp the same way you would the rest of your skin — responding to its needs rather than forcing it into a schedule.
One Size Doesn't Fit All

The beauty industry loves categories.
Dry hair.
Oily hair.
Curly hair.
Straight hair.
Damaged hair.
But real life isn't that simple. Our hair changes with age, hormones, seasons, stress, health and environment. What works beautifully for one person may not work for another.
That's why I believe learning to listen to your own hair, skin, body is far more valuable than trying to fit yourself into a marketing category.
Fragrance Isn't Always Your Friend
Many conventional products rely heavily on synthetic fragrances to create a luxurious sensory experience. While they may smell amaaazing, they can sometimes become a source of irritation for sensitive scalps. Now more people are becoming aware of the endocrine disrupting capabilities and are thankfully moving away from fragrance and embracing the natural beauty of essential oils instead.
For me, knowing that I am feeding my vessel safe, supporting and therapeutic aromas from real botanicals rather than synthetic perfumes, becomes another step towards a long and healthier life as I age.

A More Empowered Approach
Today, I approach hair care very differently.
I don't wash my hair because a bottle told me to. I wash it when I feel (or my scalp let's me know) it needs washing.
I don't choose products because of clever marketing. I make and choose products because I understand the ingredients. And perhaps most importantly, I stopped believing there was one perfect routine that works for everyone.
Because healthy hair isn't about following rules. It's about learning to understand your own body and making choices that feel right for you.
The Secret Nobody Told Me About Conditioner Bars
"For the first few showers I was standing there wondering why this thing wasn't doing much. Then I realised I needed more water. Not more conditioner. More water."

For the first few showers I stood there wondering why this thing wasn't doing much.
Then I realised something.
I didn't need more conditioner.
I needed more water.
Not a little more.
A lot more.
Just like a bar of soap, conditioner bars love water too! Once I stopped treating it like bottled conditioner and started understanding, that what I was working with is a concentrated bar, everything changed.
Now I thoroughly wet both my hair and the bar, massage and work it through my hair and use my fingers to comb it through. The difference is night and day.
If you're new to solid hair care and feeling frustrated, try adding more water before adding more product. Trust me on this one.
Why More People Are Switching to Solid Hair Care
For many people, the appeal begins primarily because they are highly concentrated, plastic-free, and long-lasting. By ditching the heavy water content and bulky packaging of liquid products, solids offer a more sustainable, cost-effective, and travel-friendly beauty routine.

The shift to solid hair care is driven by several key benefits:
Long-Lasting Value: Since they lack water, solid bars are highly concentrated. A single bar can typically last for 60 to 80 washes—roughly equivalent to two to three bottles of traditional liquid shampoo.
Eco-Friendly and Plastic-Free: Traditional liquid formulas consist of up to 80% water, meaning unnecessary water consumption in production and heavier transport emissions. Solid bars use minimal packaging, commonly eliminating plastic entirely in favor of home-compostable or recyclable materials.
Travel Convenience: Solid bars are lightweight and compact. They eliminate the risk of messy spills in your luggage and bypass airport liquid-carry-on restrictions.
Natural Formulation: Many quality solid hair care bars, like our Sweet Earth Botanical Solid Shampoo Bars prioritise naturally derived ingredients and gentle plant based bases instead of harsh chemicals and silicones. This is beneficial for those with sensitive scalps or color-treated hair.
Reduced Chemical Runoff: Without the added water weight, these products generally require fewer preservatives and help mitigate the risk of harmful chemical runoff entering waterways and home septic systems.

Why I Stayed With Solid Hair Care
For most people, they stay with solid hair care because it offers a highly concentrated, eco-friendly, and travel-friendly alternative to liquid shampoos.
Eco-friendly.
Sustainable.
Plastic free.
We've all heard those reasons before.
But for me, these reasons were obvious. As a busy homesteader, business owner, wife and mum. these botanical hair care gems offered me something much more valuable:
Simpler
Less clutter
Travel friendly
Long lasting
Beautiful ingredients, that I knew what was in it
Hair feels amazing, more health and less split ends
For me, the biggest surprise was my scalp. Years of relying on anti-dandruff products became a thing of the past. That alone was enough to convince me I wasn't going back.
A More Conscious Approach to Hair Care
At some point I stopped asking:
"What will make my hair look better?"
And started asking:
"What am I putting on my scalp every day?"

Our scalp is skin.
It absorbs.
It reacts.
It deserves the same consideration we give the rest of our body. For me, switching to botanical hair care wasn't about perfection. It was about awareness. It was about choosing ingredients I recognised. It was about reducing unnecessary clutter in our new downsized home.
It was about creating simple daily rituals that supported my wellbeing instead of complicating it.
That shift changed more than my hair care routine. It fell into my day to day routines, values and selfcare.
One thing I always come back to is this:
Hair care doesn't need to be complicated.
Somewhere along the way we were convinced we needed a different bottle for every problem. Dry hair. Oily hair. Frizzy hair. Coloured hair.
But nature has been supporting healthy hair long before supermarket shelves existed.
Sometimes the simplest ingredients really are enough.

Zero Waste Beauty That Actually Works
One of the things I love most about solid hair care is how practical it is!
No bulky bottles. No spills. No wasted product.
Just a concentrated bar that works beautifully and lasts for dozens of washes. Depending on hair length and usage, one shampoo bar can replace approximately three bottles of conventional shampoo.

How I Use My Solid Shampoo Bars
A lot of people think solid shampoo bars are difficult to use. They’re not.
In fact, they are just as simple as using a bar of soap. I wet the bar thoroughly, lather it up and start working it into my hair and scalp, allowing it to lather build while massaging my scalp intentionally for 30sec to ensure good scalp health and a small moment of self time, before I rinse out.
That’s it.
Solid shampoo bars love being wet up.
How to Use Solid Conditioner Bars
After shampooing, ensure both your hair and the conditioner bar are thoroughly wet.
Just like a beautiful handmade soap, our conditioner bars love water.
Glide the bar over the mid-lengths and ends of wet hair, or work the bar between your hands and apply the conditioner directly to your hair.
Use your fingers to comb through and distribute evenly. If needed, add a little more water while working the conditioner through your hair — this helps activate the nourishing plant butters and oils, allowing them to glide more easily through the hair.
Again, just like the shampoo bar, massage into scalp for 30 seconds of intention seconds of self care time, leave it to marinate for another 2–3 minutes
The result is soft, nourished, healthy, manageable hair without heavy silicones, synthetic coatings or unnecessary residue.
